Maruti Suzuki Alto returns 49.3 kmpl

The 800cc petrol engine powered car achieves this unrealistic figure through an impractical, yet doable mileage run.

Maruti Suzuki recently organized a mileage-run called the Alto Xplore Max Mileage Rally for owners of the Alto / Alto K10. The run was flagged off simultaneously in four cities viz. New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Jaipur and attracted over 300 participants. The winner of this mileage run was a certain Mr Dilip Das from Kolkata, who extracted a fuel economy of 49.3 kmpl from his Maruti Suzuki Alto. Next on the chart were Mr Mehdi Hassan and Mr P Sai Sumanth from Hyderabad who claimed a fuel economy of 48.2 kmpl and 47.6 kmpl respectively.

Congratulating the winners Mr Shashank Srivastava, Chief General Manager (Marketing), Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Maruti Suzuki has been pioneer in understanding the customer’s requirement of a highly fuel efficient cars.  Specifically in the current scenario of ever-escalating fuel prices, the fuel efficiency of a car becomes most critical factor for customers. Hardcore mileage runs can be painful and in turn, impractical in everyday use – after all, how can you expect to crawl around under 2,000 RPM, at painfully low speeds, with the air-conditioning turned off? What the mileage runs do teach you though, is how you can extract the maximum fuel economy out of your car if you keep it in the right rev range and use the creature comforts only when you really need them.

Nokia has launched the Asha 200, the Asha 300 and the Asha X2-02 phones in India. As expected, this Symbian S40 trio will come with a 3 months subscription of the Music Unlimited service which allows you to download songs from Nokia’s Music Store. The Nokia Asha 200 (in the image above) has a 2.4-inch display with a QWERTY keypad, a 3.5 mm audio jack, a 2.0MP camera and offers connectivity features such as Bluetooth, EDGE and GPRS. The clamour for speedily sending him to the gallows notwithstanding, a staggering Rs 16 crore has been shelled out for protecting the country's most high- profile prisoner Ajmal Kasab. 

Sentenced to death by the special anti-terror court, Kasab, in his mid-20s, is lodged in a special cell in Arthur Road jail, the construction of which alone cost the state exchequer over Rs 5.24 crore. 

"Besides Rs 5.24 crore that was spent on constructing the special cell at the Arthur Road prison, Rs 26,953 was spent on taking care of his medical needs," state Home Secretary Medha Gadgil told. 

A whopping Rs 10.87 crore was spent between March 28, 2009 and September 30, 2010 for providing him security cover by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), she said. 

However, after the state government received the bill for Rs 10.87 crore to be paid towards deployment of ITBP, it wrote to the Centre expressing its inability to make the payment, saying Kasab's security was not Maharashtra's concern alone. 

"The state government had written to the Centre asking it to consider waiving the amount. We have not received any communication so far. The issue remains unresolved," she said. 

Gadgil said the expenditure does not include the legal fees for the court case. 

However, contrary to claims in the media by those demanding Kasab's hanging without any further delay that the Pakistani terrorist was being fed delicacies like biryani, Gadgil said a modest Rs 27 per day was spent on providing him food.

Petrol prices hiked by another Rs 1.80 per litre

In yet another fuel price hike, oil companies on Wednesday raised the price of petrol by Rs 1.80 per litre to be effective midnight. This is the fifth hike since December 2010.

Following Wednesday hiked, petrol price in Delhi will cost Rs 68.64 a litre while it will cost 73.74 in Mumbai, Rs 72.64 in Chennai and Rs 73.10 in Kolkata including local taxes.

India Oil was the first to hike petrol prices while other companies are also expected to follow soon.

According to reports, Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum are losing Rs 333 crore per day on selling diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene below cost. They lose Rs 9.27 per litre on diesel, Rs 26.94 per litre on kerosene sold through the public distribution system (PDS) and Rs 260.50 per 14.2-kg LPG cylinder supplied to domestic households for cooking purposes.

Following this loss, the price of LPG and diesel are also expected to be hiked soon.

It is notable that this hike comes in times when the country is faced with high food inflation hitting the double digit of 12.21 percent for the week ended October 22, a situation described by the Finance Minister as “dangerously” high.

Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum had earlier hiked petrol prices by Rs 3.14 a litre on September 16 when the rupee was ruling at about 48 to a US dollar.

The government had in June last year deregulated, or freed, petrol from all price controls, but the retail rates have not moved in line with the cost as high inflation forced the oil companies to seek "advice" from the parent Oil Ministry before revising rates.

Renault India has taken the wraps off the much awaited small car for India. It's not a new Clio, Megane or even a Modus, but instead an all new model (in the Renault camp) - the Pulse. Renault has followed their alliance partner Nissan's path and only shown the car as of now, with the official launch happening at a later date.

Yes, you aren't the only one who thinks that the Pulse looks strikingly similar to the Nissan Micra - because it is indeed a slightly face-lifted Micra hatchback. It sits on the same V-platform as the Nissan Micra and uses majority of the body panels and elements of the Micra hatchback.

The most striking changes are at the front where you get a Different grille with a honeycomb-mesh treatment and a large, matte black slat running across the grille. The headlights are wedge-shaped and try hard to fall in line with the design of the Fluence an Koleos' headlights. To us, they simply look like elongated headlights of the Micra with the design of the internal elements inspired from the Hyundai i10.

At the back you have the familiar Micra taillights albeit with redesigned elements. The Nissan badge on the boot lid is replaced by the diamond shaped logo and the large 'Renault' monogram to add a hint of distinction to the otherwise Micra-esque design.

The interiors of the Renault Pulse are strikingly similar as those of the Micra, with the same curvaceous design theme, the round audio system, bow-hook door handles etc. The steering dons the diamond logo. The rear seats are the same as the recently tweaked Micra - so you get the extra thigh support and top end model gets the adjustable headrests.

The Renault Pulse is powered by the K9K diesel engine - which is layman terms means the same 1.5-litre dCi engine that powers the current Nissan Micra and the Mahindra Logan. The K9K engine claims to return 23 kmpl for diesel. Renault is also looking to introduce a petrol version at a later date.

Renault India will officially launch the Pulse at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi. The Pulse is expected to be priced slightly higher than the Nissan Micra. While Renault has not released any information on the variants, we expect three variants to be available at the time of the launch. The Renault Pulse showcased to us yesterday night was the RxV variant which looks like the top-of-the-line variant. The features from what we saw are as follows:

Mahindra to launch mini-SUV priced around Rs 4 lakh

Mahindra is working on a new compact SUV for the Indian market. The new vehicle is being developed with some assistance from Ssangyong Motors, which Mahindra acquired last year. The company has been working on this project for a year, and the vehicle is expected to be powered by 1.2 litre petrol and 1.5 litre diesel engines.

One of the most important aspect of this project is the pricing, and the base model of the compact SUV will have a jaw dropping price of Rs 4 lakh. The length of the car will be less than four meters to minimize the tax liability, and will also have a monocoque chassis like the newly launched Mahindra XUV500.

The car will be manufactured in Mahindra’s Chakan plant, near Pune and is slated to become the cheapest SUV in the world.

Consumer court slaps fine on MTNL, Airtel

Ramesh Panchal and Ajay Tyagi had nothing in common until their paths crossed at the Mumbai Suburban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum.

Last week, the consumer forum ordered a compensation of Rs30,000, inclusive of the cost of complaint, to be paid to each victim.

Though Panchal and Tyagi were victims of different service providers, both suffered the same fate due to poor services. While Panchal complained against the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) for leaving his landline out of service for five months. Tyagi had a similar grievance against Bharti Airtel Ltd for not activating a new SIM card acquired from the company after losing one.

The grounds of complaint for the duo also turned out to be similar. Both Panchal and Tyagi cited how they suffered professional setbacks in the absence of their phones.

While Panchal was dependent on his phone for his interior designing and carpentry business, Tyagi had to suffer dearly for not being able to remain in constant touch with his clients as an employee of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC).

In 2009, Geeta Vimoria replied on behalf of MTNL OCB exchange, alleging that Panchal had lodged a false complaint since they had replaced his instrument. However, the forum observed that if Panchal's line was active, why would MTNL send him a cumulative rent in January 2008.

Even Airtel tried to blame Tyagi, claiming that his SIM card did not get activated since he did not follow the instructions for activation that were e-mailed to him. However, Tyagi attached a series of e-mail interactions with the customer care department about how his was unable to activate his SIM card despite following the e-mailed  instructions.

Giving similar observations in both the cases, President J L Despande and member Deepa Bidnurkar observed that “considering their professional preoccupation, no one would spend so much time and effort in forging a complaint”.

Yeddy surrenders before Lokayukta court

Bangalore: Former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who went missing after the Lokayukta court issued an arrest warrant against him in two land denotification cases, surrendered in the court on Saturday.

He was arrested and later sent to judicial custody till October 22.

Earlier in the day, Lokayukta police was at Yeddyurappa’s residence to deliver the arrest warrant issued by the Lokayukta court but returned empty handed.

Yeddyurappa had earlier also skipped court when Special Judge NK Sudhindhra Rao pronounced the verdict. Yeddyurappa had sent a medical certificate saying he was suffering from back pain and sought exemption from personal appearance.


Yeddyurappa's lawyer said they would appeal against Lokayukta court's decision in the Karnataka High Court on Monday.

The Lokayukta court also rejected the bail application of former minister SN Krishnaiah Setty, another accused in the cases, and directed his arrest.

However, the former CM’s two sons -- BJP Lok Sabha member BY Raghavendra and BY Vijayendra -- and son-in-law R Sohan Kumar were granted conditional bail. The three were also accused in the cases.

The cases were filed by two Bangalore advocates Sirajin Bhasha and NK Balaraj in January this year after Governor HR Bhardwaj gave them sanction to launch criminal proceedings against Yeddyurappa and his kin for conspiring to denotify lands in and around Bangalore in return for monetary gains.

One of the complaints concerns denotification of government land in Geddalahalli and in Devarachikkanahalli and Arakere in favour of people close to the former CM. The second case relates to denotification of land in Uttarahalli and Agara villages.

Flying on fruit juice: Jumbo Jet powered by 'plum' biofuel takes to the skies

A passenger jet partially fuelled by fruit juice oil has taken to the skies.

The Air New Zealand Boeing 747-400 was powered by a 50-50 blend of oil from a plum-sized fruit known as jatropha and traditional jet fuel.

The two-hour flight demonstrated that greenhouse gas emissions from long-haul flights could be cut by 65 per cent by using the biofuel.

Air New Zealand's chief pilot Dave Morgan said that up to 1.5 tons of fuel could be saved in a 12-hour flight, and cut carbon dioxide emmissions by about five tons - around 60 per cent.

He called the fuel savings 'significant,' though the monetary gain will depend on the price of oil.

Andrew Herdman, director general of the Asia Pacific Airlines Association said: 'At the moment these feed stocks are still facing the challenge of reaching cost competitiveness with conventional jet fuel, particularly when the price of oil is around $60 a barrel.'

Biofuels would become competitive sooner if an emission trading system raised the price of carbon-based fuels, he added.

Air New Zealand obtained the jatropha oil for its test flight from Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and India. Seeds from the jatropha - a bush with round, plum-like fruit - are crushed to produce a yellowish oil that is refined and mixed with diesel.

Some environmental groups have questioned whether jatropha and other plants used as biofuels are sustainable. 

They have expressed concerns about the plants' impact if more land and resources are devoted to growing them on a commercial scale.

Mr Herdman warned that while several airlines testing biofuels have shown promising results, the 'drop-ins' as the plant oils are called, still face 'another couple of years' work to demonstrate that it can be certified' as a suitable addition to jet fuel.

'It's got to perform exactly the same or better, and it's got to be a competitive price,' he said.

Mr Morgan also cautioned that 'many more steps' were needed before biofuel could become 'a commercial aviation fuel source.'

Aakash - the wonder tablet

On Wednesday, cheapest tablet was launched in India. It will be sold to Indian students at the subsidized price of $35 (Rs 1750) and later in shops for general public for $60 (Rs. 3000). Most of people living in India are poor and not able to buy products such as Apple’s iPad, Tabs etc.

This device was earlier advertised as Sakshat, but then renamed to Aakash. Human Resources Development Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal unveiled Aakash in the capital recently. 500 tabs were distributed for free to students who were invited to attend the event.

“The rich have access to the digital world, the poor and ordinary have been excluded. Aakash will end that digital divide,” Telecoms and Education Minister Kapil Sibal said.

Aakash is developed by  Datawind, a Canada-based company founded by two Indians named Suneet and Raja Tulli. But these devices will be made and sold in India by Quad, a company based in Andhra Pradesh.

Aakash is Hindi word which means “sky”. Indian govt is buying its first units from a British company which is assembling these devices in India. 100,000 units will be given for free to students.

This device will have GPRS and wi-fi support to enable internet for users. In India only 8 percent of population have access to Internet. This device is aimed for university students for eLearning.

This device has inbuilt 2 GB memory and comes with 2 GB external card which is expandable up to 32 GB.

We have to use external dongle for 3G. It has 2 usb port to connect external devices. we can also connect keyboard to it.

This device may look good to students who have never used any tablet in their life. But it is very slow compared to other devices available in market. This device has only 256 MB ram to run android which is just fine to run most of apps. It used resistive touch instead of full touch screen.

So, if you just look at the price tag offer by govt, this device seems ok. But we have used more powerful devices so these tablets will make us feel slow.

By the way, this may be cheapest Indian tablet but there are lot cheaper tablet available that are made in China.
